Connecticut relief fund
for vulnerable workers & families
A much-needed rescue fund has been established to benefit long-standing immigrant families resident in Connecticut, most with children at home, who as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic have been suffering unemployment, loss of wages, serious food shortages, and lack of resources to assure the security of their housing and health care. Domestic workers and their children in particular have been among the groups hardest hit by job and income losses in our communities. These typically “mixed status” families, often with US-born citizen children, and adults with less secure immigration status, have been hard-working stalwarts in Connecticut communities; yet, they are usually ineligible for regular forms of government assistance, including unemployment insurance.
The Relief Fund is being launched by a coalition of immigrant worker advocacy organizations, collaborating to provide direct assistance to immigrant families hurt by the Covid-19 Pandemic in Connecticut. The Fund seeks to support immigrant children, families, and communities affected by the pandemic to recover and rebuild.
The Fund is a partnership among Connecticut-based grassroots organizations (the Connecticut Worker Center and the Connecticut Domestic Worker Justice Campaign), joined by the Brazilian Worker Center of Boston and the National Domestic Workers Alliance, with strong records in advocacy for immigrant workers in our state. These organizations – known and trusted by immigrant workers and their families – are committed to publicizing the Relief Fund, identifying families in need, and organizing cash grants, food distributions, rental assistance, and other supports for them. The funds collected will be disbursed to families with the most pressing needs.
The Brazilian Worker Center (BWC) serves as fiscal sponsor for the Connecticut Worker Center, a registered public charity in Connecticut, who will do primary administration of the Relief Fund. BWC is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity; the Federal Identification Number (EIN) for the BWC is 04-3273525. Please make checks payable and send contributions to the Connecticut Worker Center, 1067 Park Avenue, Bridgeport CT 06604.
